Where Does Camp Meet?

Both Wave Warrior's (7+) and Wave Warrior Minis (4-6 year olds) are held at Private's Beach (4524 Opal Cliff Dr Santa Cruz, CA 95062) Street parking is available and super accessible.

What should my child bring to class?

Camps are 5 hours long and we want to take full advantage of these 5 hours here is a short list of items to bring.- Lunch (12:00 -12:30)-Backpack- Swimming Goggles- Swim Cap- Wetsuit (Available for Rental and purchase if your child does not have one)- Surfboard or Boogie Board if you have one- Light snack and water bottle- Towel

When does Class begin and End?

Wave Warrior's "Littles" is from 9 AM- 10 AM at Privates Beach! Wave Warrior's (7+) Class begins promptly at 10 am so please be 15 minutes early so that we can start on time. Class ends at 3 pm.

Should I arrive early?

Yes, you should arrive at least 15 minutes before camp starts. Not only will this allow us to start class on time, but part of our curriculum is teaching kids the importance of promptness and being ready to get to work. When the kids arrive, they will help the instructors off load the equipment and organize it on the beach.

What swimming ability should my child be at?

For our Wave Warrior "Little's" Class students are expected to at least be able to tread water and keep head above water. It is suggested that a parent or guardian is present IN THE WATER during this lessonFor Wave Warrior's (7+) All athletes regardless of age should be sufficient swimmer's in a pool. This means being able to swim at least the length of a 25 yard pool continuously. We are dealing with the ocean and just being able to keep your head above water is not sufficient enough for survival.

What is the student to instructor ratio?

For Wave Warrior's "Little's" it is suggested that each student has a parent or guardian present in the water with them at all times for 1:1 ratios. There will only be one instructor present for up to 12 students so the safety is put upon the parent or guardian unless the student is already confident in the ocean.For Wave Warrior's (7+)  camps we run off of 4:1 Kid to Instructor ratios. We have spent our lives as Lifeguards, EMT's and Big Wave Surfer's risk mitigation is our specialty and we treat your child's safety with the utmost respect and care.

How does communication work prior to Camp?

Great Question! The week before camp begins, we will send out a group text to discuss the best places to park, make sure everyone has the proper gear and answer any last minute question's before class begins.

How many kids are in the Camp?

We have a limit at 25 participants (4:1 Student to Instructor Ratios) in our Wave Warrior's (7+)  camps. Students will be broken up into age group/ ability levels (typically 3 different groups) based off of age and ability level.For our Wave Warrior's "Little's Camp" We will have at most 12 students in class at a time!

What is a typical day at camp like?

For Wave Warrior's "Little's" we arrive at 8:45 to be ready promptly at 9 am for class. We do some light warm ups and games to get the kids acclimated. We then go into some sort of lesson for the day (dolphin diving, self rescue techniques, swimming technique, how to put on fins, etc.), which then leads us to some boogieboarding and bodysurfing and we finish off with some free play. Each class builds off of the previous class! By day 5 your child will be boogieboarding and or surfing!Students arrive at 9:45 am and help unload the gear from the truck/ help organize the equipment. From there we begin with a short 5-10 minute morning talk/ quick stretch. Students are then broken up into the 3 groups that they will be assigned at the beginning of camp and run through stations.The Stations Are:1) Surf Station where kids will learn proper mechanics of how to surf, how the surfing lineup works, etiquette and advanced surf coaching for the upper levels.2) The Watermen Station where students learn different techniques from stand up paddling, prone paddling, breath holding techniques, safety and hazard recognition/ mitigation, etc.3) Surf Responder Station where kids will learn anything from hands only CPR to bleeding control/ shock management, how to recognize someone in distress, techniques to pull someone safely from the water, etc. Note, depending on the child's age will determine what they learn but there is something to learn for everyone.

How do you VET your instructors?

Great Question! All of our instructors have been hand picked by Jack to create an incredible amount of diversity and cross off all the boxes. We have instructor's that are paramedics, EMT's, professional surfers, etc. Each instructor goes through basic First Aid and CPR classes and is trained up to standard for basic Ocean Rescue techniques.
